Car Overheating? What to Do in 5 Steps, and What to Avoid

November 2, 2026 · Pelangi Automotive, Johor Bahru

The temperature gauge is climbing, or a red warning light has just come on. If you’re searching for car overheating what to do, the short answer is this: stop as soon as it’s safe and switch off the engine. An engine can go from a cheap repair to a very expensive one in a few minutes of driving hot, so those minutes matter.

Here’s what to do, what to avoid, and how to work out what went wrong. It’s written for everyday driving in Malaysia, where jams and hot afternoons make overheating more likely.

Car overheating what to do: 5 steps

1. Turn off the air-con and turn on the heater

If you can’t stop straight away, switch off the air-con to reduce the load on the engine. Then set the heater and fan to maximum. It’s uncomfortable, but it pulls some heat away from the engine while you look for somewhere safe to stop.

2. Pull over somewhere safe

Indicate, slow down and stop well away from traffic. On a highway, use the emergency lane and put your hazard lights on. Stand clear of the traffic side of the car while you wait.

3. Switch off the engine and open the bonnet

Turn the engine off. Once any steam has stopped, open the bonnet to let the heat escape. If there’s heavy steam or smoke, keep your distance and wait. If you see flames, move well away and call 999.

4. Wait at least 30 minutes

Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine. The system is under pressure, and boiling coolant can spray out and cause serious burns. Give it at least 30 minutes, and longer if the top hose still feels hot.

5. Check the coolant, then decide

Once the engine is cool, look at the coolant reservoir. If it’s low, top it up with the right coolant. In an emergency, clean water can get you to a workshop, but tell the mechanic, because the mix will need correcting. Look for leaks under the car and around the hoses.

If the coolant was empty, you can see a leak, or the gauge climbs again, don’t keep driving. Call for a tow. A tow costs far less than a new engine.

That’s the full answer to car overheating what to do at the roadside. The rest of this guide covers what not to do, and why it happened.

What to avoid when your car overheats

  • Don’t keep driving “just to reach home”. This is how most serious damage happens.
  • Don’t open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
  • Don’t pour cold water onto a hot engine, as the sudden temperature change can crack metal parts.
  • Don’t ignore it because the gauge dropped again. A falling gauge can even mean the coolant has run out.

Why cars overheat

Overheating is a symptom. These are the usual causes:

  • Low coolant or a leak: from a hose, the radiator, the water pump or a loose clamp.
  • Radiator fan failure: a classic if the car overheats in traffic but is fine on the highway.
  • Thermostat stuck shut: coolant can’t flow through to the radiator.
  • Water pump failure: coolant stops circulating properly.
  • Blocked radiator: dirt on the outside or deposits inside reduce cooling.
  • Head gasket failure: often shows up as white exhaust smoke, coolant loss or bubbles in the reservoir.

What happens at the workshop

A top-up gets you moving, but it doesn’t fix the reason the coolant went missing. At our workshop, we check the cooling system for leaks and test the fan and thermostat, along with the engine itself if it ran very hot. We then explain what we found and give you a quote, and nothing starts until you agree. Read more about our engine repair in Johor Bahru.

How to prevent overheating

  • Check the coolant level when the engine is cold, about once a month and before long trips.
  • Keep up with regular car servicing, including coolant changes at the interval in your service book.
  • Look at hoses for cracks and swelling, and look under the car for green, pink or orange spots.
  • If the gauge sits higher than usual, or your air-con stops being cold in traffic, get it checked. Both can point to a failing radiator fan.
  • Don’t ignore a coolant warning light, even if it goes off again.

So if you remember one thing about car overheating what to do, it’s stop early. Print out this car overheating what to do list or save it on your phone. Most drivers who stop right away face a much smaller repair than those who try to make it home.
